Development of local wisdom: A hybrid systematic literature review and bibliometric analysis

Local wisdom has attracted interdisciplinary attention because of its relevance to social, cultural, and sustainable development. However, research on its development remains fragmented across contexts and disciplines. This study systematically reviews and maps research on local wisdom development by identifying dominant themes and emerging directions. A hybrid Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and bibliometric analysis was conducted using the Scopus database. Publications from 2014 to 13 December 2025 were searched. The initial search using “Local Development” AND “Wisdom” identified 1,993 records, while refinement using “Development of Local Wisdom” yielded 19 records. After excluding six conference papers, two book chapters, and two non-open-access articles, nine journal articles were included. VOSviewer and Bibliometrix were used to analyze publication trends, keyword co-occurrence, thematic patterns, authorship, and citation structures. The findings indicate that research on local wisdom development is associated primarily with local development, community-based approaches, rural contexts, and sustainability. The literature increasingly positions local wisdom as a community resource for addressing development challenges. However, connections between micro-level cultural practices and macro-level institutions, policies, and social structures remain limited. Future research should integrate local actors, cultural practices, institutions, policies, and power relations to explain how local wisdom contributes to social transformation and sustainable development.
