| Modality in Ghanaian Parliamentary Discourse: A Corpus-Assisted Study of Modal Auxiliary Verbs in the Majority and the Minority Leaders’ Opening Statements
Abstract: Modal auxiliaries in parliamentary discourse, such as the Opening Statements of the Majority and Minority Leaders, play a significant role in parliamentary communication. However, limited attention has been given to how they are strategically employed in parliamentary opening statements. This study, therefore, investigates the distribution and semantic functions of modal auxiliary verbs in the Opening Statements of the Majority and Minority Leaders of Ghana’s Parliament. To achieve this aim, four (4) Opening Statements (two from each Leader) with a corpus size of 10,726 tokens served as the data for the study. AntConc. | Surveying HE Students on Difficulties with Old English Translation for the Development of an Effective Teaching and Learning Resource
Abstract: This study investigates the specific challenges Higher Education (HE) students face when translating Old English and evaluates how existing online tools support or hinder their learning. Drawing on questionnaire data and focus group discussions with seven undergraduate students, the project identifies recurring difficulties related to learning Old English grammar, navigation of digital resources, and the balance between accessibility and linguistic depth.
